Exploring the Atomic Force Microscope: A Window into the Nanoscale World

The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is one of the most powerful tools in modern science, providing researchers with the ability to visualize and manipulate materials at the nanoscale. Unlike traditional optical microscopes, which are limited by the wavelength of light, AFMs use a mechanical probe to scan surfaces at the atomic level, enabling unprecedented detail in imaging and measurement.

At its core, an AFM operates by moving a sharp tip, mounted on a flexible cantilever, across the surface of a sample. As the tip interacts with the surface atoms, forces such as van der Waals forces, electrostatic forces, and mechanical contact cause the cantilever to deflect. These deflections are measured with extreme precision, often using a laser beam reflected from the cantilever into a photodetector.
